During Spring Festivals in Ancient Greece, the mother of all gods and men, Rhea, was honored. Romans also honored the Mother Goddess Cybele in 3rd century Rome. In the 1600’s, the British began celebrating “Mothering Sunday” which occurred on the 4th Sunday of Lent where all employers sent their servants home to honor their mothers. It eventually included all mothers.
It wasn’t until 1908 when Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia convinced her church to honor mothers by creating Mother’s Day on the anniversary of her mother’s death on May 10th, that the tradition began here in the United States. Six years later, it was declared a national holiday on the second Sunday in May.
